Inauguration of the new synagogue building on September 11, 1966

The inauguration of the new synagogue building had great significance for the Jewish community of Wiesbaden. Jewish life had irrevocably re-emerged in Wiesbaden.

“The glory and dignity of the king’s daughter is within. We are not for appearing with pomp, with a great effort. We are more for convincing by the intrinsic value of what we do. And I believe that this will find its recognition in the hearts of all those who are well-meaning.” This is how State Rabbi Dr. Isaak Emil Lichtigfeld described the new synagogue building that replaced the old building in the backyard at the same location. But he was describing even more than that, and that was the work of the Wiesbaden Jewish Community. Minister President Dr. Georg August Zinn spoke words of remembrance, and Lord Mayor Georg Buch represented the state capital Wiesbaden at the ceremony to inaugurate the new synagogue on September 11, 1966. Descendants of Wiesbaden Jews who were murdered in the Shoah and members of the Wiesbaden Jewish Community who were driven to emigrate by the Nazi regime also attended the inauguration. The city of Wiesbaden covered the costs of travel to and from the ceremony as well as their stay in Wiesbaden.
